Our Mission

Driven to build innovative technologies on a foundation of solid science.

We have a passion for technology and believe our understanding of the crop microbiome could shift the current course of humanity and the planet.

Our current efforts are focused on enabling microbes to fix and supply more nitrogen to corn. In the future, ON Technology™ will be used to provide crops with better access to phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients.

“By helping farmers protect their nutrient investment in an unpredictable and complex system, Pivot Bio’s ON Technology is a global win-win… for farmers and for the environment.”
— Kevin Hammill, Chief Operating Officer

“The more we can do to lessen the impact from nitrogen fertilizer losses and improve the health of our oceans and rivers, the better.”
— Shayin Gottlieb, Analytics Team Lead

“To me, nothing’s more exciting or fulfilling than helping to create groundbreaking — and world-changing — technology.”
— Neal Shah, Senior Research Associate

“From strengthening the food system to providing economic benefits for farmers in a way that helps protect the environment, our goal is to make a lasting impact on the world around us.”
— Karsten Temme, CEO and Co-Founder of Pivot Bio

Our People

A culture that’s built on ideas and ideals.

At Pivot Bio, we are driven by curiosity, inspired by the power of innovation and passionate about turning today’s big ideas into tomorrow’s crop management breakthroughs.

Our core team of scientists, researchers and key advisors has been instrumental to our success. We believe their knowledge, passion and unique understanding of the microbiome will continue to uncover exciting innovations and opportunities. Not just for Pivot Bio and the farmers who trust our products. But for everyone who believes that powerful ideas can change the world.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCIENCE.

Karsten Temme

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

For years, Karsten has been fascinated with the limitless potential of the unseen microbes that inhabit our world. While earning his Ph.D. at University of California, San Francisco, his graduate research focused on enhancing the nitrogen-fixing potential of soil-borne microbes. Seeking to produce “more than scientific journal articles” and driven by the desire to create meaningful change in the world, Karsten partnered with his friend and colleague, Alvin Tamsir, to create Pivot Bio.

ALVIN TAMSIR

Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder

With a deep understanding of both molecular biology and computer science, Alvin has long been at the cutting edge of applying engineering principles to improve biologicals. It was while earning his Ph.D. at University of California, San Francisco, that Alvin first explored these principles to solve complex challenges at the microbial level. Striking up a friendship — and later a partnership — with Karsten provided the inspiration needed to turn white-paper thinking into groundbreaking technology.

KEVIN HAMMILL

Chief Operating Officer

With a strong background in agriculture, business management and operations, including sales, marketing and strategy, Kevin brings a wide range of experience and big-picture thinking to Pivot Bio. Comfortable in either a corporate boardroom or on the farm, his unique understanding of both environments has been critical in helping to shape the Pivot Bio brand and grow its business. And, like other members of the team, Kevin thrives on the company’s collaborative approach and entrepreneurial spirit.

Partners who share our vision and our passion.

Powerful breakthroughs come from strong partnerships. At Pivot Bio, our Board of Directors brings a wealth of experience and insight — as well as a shared vision for how Pivot Bio’s technology can improve agriculture and our world. In addition, our team collaborates and innovates alongside some of the world’s leading academic minds through active engagement with our Scientific Advisory Board.
