The N-OVATOR™ Impact

Everything we do at Pivot Bio is in service to growers and finding new ways to make their operations more sustainable and profitable. Last year, we launched a pilot to quantify the environmental impact our microbes are having – the N-OVATOR™ program – and the results were greater than anything we could have imagined.

The program is designed to multiply the benefit of our nitrogen-fixing microbes by helping farmers turn their replacement of synthetic fertilizer into a new revenue stream. In 2022, we paid over $1.5 million in upfront grower incentives, and right now we are working to quantify the full financial value of their reductions.

Participating growers eliminated nearly 26 million pounds of synthetic fertilizer across nearly 725,000 acres, while maintaining yields. They replaced up to 20% of their synthetic fertilizer with our microbial nitrogen and documented the practice change. This showed the avoidance of ~80,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions – equivalent to the annual electricity used in 15,500 homes.

Last year was an incredible accomplishment, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Given the success of the pilot, we opened the program to all Pivot Bio customers for the first time in 2023. By working closely with many of the largest companies in the U.S., we’re helping to establish a new kind of sustainability partnership for the growers we work with, while enabling forward-looking businesses to reduce their Scope 3 emissions and support the adoption of regenerative farming practices. We hope to enroll hundreds more growers and millions of acres in the program this year.

The N-OVATOR™ program is the embodiment of Pivot Bio’s mission to work alongside farmers to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations and a critical next step in the evolution of our company.
